Telematic Technology’s Good for Young UK Drivers

Telematic Technology’s Good for Young UK Drivers

According to the latest report by the Co-operative Insurance, British young drivers are encouraged to driver safer thanks to telematics technology used by insurance providers.

This technology, introduced earlier this year, measures the drivers' behaviour on the roads, such as speed, and then scores it on a scale of 5 (poor to excellent). Insuring companies claim that 35% of the drivers, whose vehicles are equipped with the system drive "excellent", while 5% score "poor" on their driving skills.

Those whose driving skills are excellent are rewarded with premium discounts by insurance companies.

Commenting on the effects of the new technology, David Neave of The Co-operative Insurance, said: "Our data shows that the vast majority of our customers are responding to our 'carrot' rather than 'stick' approach and are improving their driving skills because they are rewarded for doing so. 'Our scheme is only in its infancy, but it is clear that if telematics was taken up on a larger scale it could be a major step forward in improving the safety on Britain's roads."

The detailed report by the Co-operative Insurance is available on the official website of the Co-operative Banking Group.
