UK Students Might Face Huge University Debts

UK Students Might Face Huge University Debts

The proposals from Lord Brown on university funding have caused controversial reaction from the UK government.

As such, Mr. Brown suggested to not only increase the existing cap from £3,290 to £7,000 but also to allow the best British universities raise tuition fees up to £12,000. He also thinks that it would be the right thing to do to allow graduates repay their university debts only when they get a job that pays £21,000 or more.

Even though some members of the government are ready to support the proposals, others are strongly opposed to it. For example, Mr. Hughes and Campbell say they will not let the rise in fees come into force.

They say the proposals of Lord Brown, should they be approved, might face £70,000 debts as they graduate from the university. In large cities, such as London, which traditionally have higher living costs, this figure might reach £90,000.

As a result, many students from middle-class families might be priced out of higher education.

Aaron Porter of National Union of Students is strongly opposed to the proposed changes.
