Swindon Reports Increased Accidental Damage to Household Items

Latest research carried out by one of the biggest British providers of home insurance – the Swindon company – showed that millions of UK homeowners are spending enormous amounts of money on the replacement of home contents, which was ruined in the process of cleaning. For instance, one of the most valuable British treasures – Magna Carta issued in 1215 – which is now being kept in the British Library was almost destroyed last week as one of the cleaners used a chemical cleaner on its case that malfunctioned. The same things oftentimes happen in British houses, when homeowners are using unprofessional cleaning products such as soda, lemon, etc., which are known to cause permanent damage to household items if used incorrectly. The research, which was conducted by the Swindon insurance company among its 1,500 customers, revealed that 31% of those surveyed have caused permanent damage to their property as a result of inappropriate cleaning techniques at least once in the past 2 years. According to the survey, the most widespread accidents caused by inappropriate cleaning are removing of varnish from surfaces and scratching of TV screens. Swindon insurance specialists suggest that homeowners follow simple advice to prevent cleaning damage to their property. First and foremost, homeowners are recommended to follow manufacturer’s instructions and to use ready-made cleaners as directed. Swindon insurance highlights the fact that cleaning damage to households items is generally covered only under the accidental damage insurance policy, which is sold separately. As Mr. Steve Chelton, Swindon development manager for insurance, puts it, homeowners should be very careful when choosing home insurance in order to clearly understand what is being covered by it. If in doubts, homeowners are strongly recommended to ask questions regarding accidental damage cover and other types of protection. He adds that most of UK insurance companies offer accidental damage cover as an add-on to traditional home insurance for a slightly higher price.
