Over Half of UK Pets Are Uninsured – GoCompare

A recent survey performed by a UK comparison website Gocompare, revealed that even through the vast majority of Brits (86%) consider their pets as family members, over half of them do not have pet medical insurance.

Of the 56% of UK pet owners, who do not have proper medical cover for their pets, only 11% regularly set aside some money to cover any medical expenses, should they occur.

Of those questioned, 43% said they will use their savings to pay for vet bills, further 36% plan on using a credit card, and 17% feel they can easily borrow from their friends and family.

The main reason for not buying pet insurance cited by the survey respondents is its unaffordability. In fact, however, the average pet insurance premium currently stands at 10 pounds a month.

Commenting on the findings, Phil Paterson-Fox of Gocompare, said: “The research shows that we are a nation of pet lovers and with such a high number of pet owners considering their pet to be a member of the family, it's surprising that so many aren't protecting themselves from the potential cost of a claim.”
