UK Pet Owners to Spend £100M on Christmas Gifts

A research was carried out by The Co-operative Insurance, which entered the UK pet insurance market, in the run up to Christmas.

It showed that Brits are planning to spend around £100 million (or £11.78 per person) on Christmas gifts for their pets. This figure represents a 10% increase from the one seen last December.

The interesting fact, however, is that most Brits are not planning to purchase presents to their family members or colleagues. As for those, who are, almost 45% will spend less than in 2009. The reasons cited by survey respondents are as follows:
•    to save money (37%)
•    bad family relations (27%)
•    no free money (24%)
Commenting on the results of the survey, Lee Mooney of The Co-operative Pet Insurance, said that "UK is a nation of pet lovers. Dogs and cats are increasingly seen as part of the family and we appear to be determined to show this at Christmas."
