Rent Rates in UK Are Unaffordable – Shelter

Research finds out that rent rates are unaffordable for Brits in 55% of regions in the UK, making rental properties inaccessible.

The housing charity Shelter recently published its "Private Rent Watch," in which it claims that rental properties are unaffordable in many regions of the UK.

As such, the charity found out that in 55% of local authority areas rent rates for a 2-bedroom house account for 35% and more of the household's income. Many studies published earlier stated that such rents are unaffordable.

The most unaffordable regions, according to Shelter, are inner London boroughs, South Northamptonshire and Rushcliffe.

In the opinion of Shelter experts, the trend of overpricing property is very concerning. Property for purchase has long been priced out from the reach of Brits; now it seems that the same is going to happen to the rental property.

Campbell Robb, Shelter’s Chief Executive, says: ‘We have become depressingly familiar with first time buyers being priced out of the housing market, but the impact of unaffordable rents is more dramatic.
