EST Provides Homeowners with Simple DIY Tips

The results of the Energy Saving Trust (EST) research, published yesterday, on May 21st suggest that 53% of the British population are not sure whether they feel like completing the basic home improvement jobs.

However, the EST claims that some simple skills and DIY shy will not only allow homeowners to achieve considerable savings on their energy bills, but will also add extra value to the property, which will save homeowners money that would have been paid to contractors. The estimates of the Energy Saving Trust suggest that simple home improvements might help UK citizens save up to £220 million a year in energy bills, as well as they will eliminate the emission of carbon dioxide by 1.2 million tonnes.

The EST survey was conducted among 2,000 Brits, 77% of who said that they did not plan any DIY jobs. The Trust named a number of simple home improvements that will definitely help reduce the energy bill of an average UK citizen; they improvements include: filling of floorboards cracks, fitting draught excluders to doors, and skirting boards. Such measures as insulating pipes or fitting a jacket to a hot water cylinder might help homeowners save a minimum of £40 a year.

Other tips, provided by the Energy Saving Trust, include putting a water butt, which will collect approximately 200 litres, outside and using this water for watering the plants.

Of course, the energy-saving measure are not limited to these simple and low-cost improvements; there are other projects, which are larger and more costly, such as double glazing or installation of energy efficient heating systems, which will definitely turn out to be good long-term investments.
